Fresh was a pioneer in the rap game for a few reasons. He was part of a groundbreaking group that fought the legal system head on for free speech and first amendment rights in music. They became the first music artists to be labeled ‘legally obscene’ by the government. That labeling resulted in the creation of the “explicit” stickers being placed on album covers for the first time on their As Nasty As They Wanna Be album.
Fresh Kid also put Asian rappers on the map, by being the first Asian rapper to have mega multi-platinum success.
Lastly, Fresh was an unfiltered, uncensored personification of what hip hop is- an art form that no governmental figure, nor a person who is not of the culture should ever have a say in regarding what young people should and should not be allowed to express through their bodies of work. Fresh, along with his 2 Live Crew members, stood up for what they believed in at all cost. In 1990, he and the rest of 2 Live Crew were locked up after performing a show that law enforcement deemed to be obscene. But that never stopped them from being who they are.
Throughout his career, all Fresh wanted to do was create music that spoke to rap fans across the world. His persistent sacrifices to do so, has made he and his 2 Live Crew members forever legends in music. Fresh Kid Ice’s contributions will continue to live on through his highly impactful legacy. Rest easy Fresh after a job well done here.
