Bad News For DMX, Rapper Facing More Time In Jail After Pleading Guily To Tax Evasion
If it’s not one thing, it’s another. DMX has been embroiled in a legal battle with the IRS for months now but it looks like things are coming to an end. According to Rolling Stone, on Thursday, Nov. 30, DMX has pleaded guilty to one count of tax fraud. The latest news comes just five months after he was charged with 14 counts of tax fraud. Initially, he pleaded not guilty but yesterday he had a totally different take on the situation.
Taking Full Responsibility:
Initially, DMX blamed the “people in charge” of his finances from 2010 to 2015, a five-year span when the rapper didn’t file any tax returns. At that time, the rapper is said to have withheld $1.7 million in taxes. But now, he’s taking full responsibility for the tax blunder. When he appeared before a federal judge in New York yesterday, prosecutors accused him of taking part in a “multi-year scheme to conceal millions of dollars.” While in court, DMX took the L for the accusation.
“Today, Earl Simmons admitted to systematically cheating on his taxes. By insisting to be paid in cash whenever possible and having royalty payments diverted to the accounts of financial surrogates, Simmons concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars of income from the IRS. Simmons made a choice between ‘Right or Wrong,’ and did the right thing, admitting his guilt, and agreeing to pay his tax liabilities. No matter who you are or whatever fame you may have achieved, the law applies equally to all, and no one is exempt from the shared obligation to pay our taxes.”
A Different Perspective:
Although DMX has taken full responsibility for the tax mishap, his attorney Murray Richman released a statement to ABC News offering his opinion of DMX’s guilty plea. “He’s of the opinion that he’s guilty because he didn’t properly supervise his own life. He gave the responsibility of paying his taxes to others but he knows it was his responsibility. He’s owning up to it at this particular point.”
According to the Associated Press, DMX’s sentencing is scheduled for March 29, 2018, He faces up to five years behind bars.
